Alan Jacobson, who runs BrassTacks is a very able designer. I do, however, feel that he still clings to the US model of newspaper design -- design the fronts, and screw the rest. This design mantra is a far cry from the European papers who carry their design through every page, and hence win far more SND World's Best Designed Newspaper awards. Redesigning is like making over a person, it involves changing the mindset of staff too. Indian journalists, tend to steer clear of design, because they believe it's not their job. I think that's a very narrow way to look at newspapers. It's almost like saying, "I want to be a chef, but I refuse to cut the vegetables."
Journalists -- both visual and editorial -- must realise that as newspapers begin to downsize, it's important to expand your skill set.

Hi,

Redesign is not a waste of time....its the process to re-brand whats dying...its the process to solve the desired problems, i.e. inconsistency of design elements through out different sections of the newspaper, How do one separates the content from advertisements, space planning, etc. Does the newspaper meets the current style statement, does it look contemporary? Does it attract the desired target audience n so on...This are the few problems. So how do you solve this problems? Redesign is not just giving a good look n feel to the newspaper but its more than that...it will help the newspaper to sustain in the market....

An interesting site that deals with design in newspaper, and some of the ever-changing theory about it is

BrassTacksDesign.com

Lots of information, examples, etc. They do this for a living, so they can talk knowledgeably about what works in what doesn't.
